Podcast Review: Fake Doctors, Real Friends

The Scrubs rewatch podcast…

Everyone has that one TV show. That one show that you can return to no matter what mood you’re in and where you are in your life. For many, that show appears to be Friends. Other popular choices include The Simpsons, Seinfeld and Frasier. A common theme seems to be long-running sitcoms that provide self-contained storylines alongside a more episodic narrative. For me, that show is Scrubs. In my 20s, I would cycle through all nine seasons of Scrubs and then simply start again from the beginning. I briefly started training to be a nurse because of Scrubs. And so, this podcast feels like it was made for me…

Fake Doctors, Real Friends sees Zach Braff and Donald Faison (who play JD and Turk respectively) doing a rewatch of every Scrubs episode from start to finish. Guests include fellow cast members John C. McGinley and Sarah Chalke, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence as well as various writers, fans and featured musical artists. Each episode sees producers Joelle Monique and Danl Goodman pick a random member of the public (often someone who works in healthcare) to call in so that Zach and Donald can ‘fix their lives’. It’s all lovely heartwarming stuff that will be manna from heaven to any Scrubs fans like myself. I particularly enjoyed the revelation that McGinley is just as awesome in real life as the character he portrays.

Braff and Faizon are big friends in real life and the chemistry they share is both infectious and irresistible. Even the fact that many of these episodes were recorded during the Covid pandemic doesn’t dampen the sheer joy of hearing people who are so passionate about Scrubs dissecting each episode in surgical detail (pun intended).

There are so many of these rewatch podcasts around at the moment and the reason for that is that the format works so well. Fake Doctors, Real Friends is one of the best out there. Revisiting a TV show I know intimately has been a real pleasure. What has two thumbs and loves this podcast…
