Film Review: Bliss – 4/10

‘It’s like I was possessed…’

Hmm vampire movies. I like the idea of them, but there are very few I actually love. From Duck Till Dawn is about the only one, and even then, that is mainly in spite of the vampires, not because of them. Vampire movies just feel like low hanging fruit in the horror genre. Cheap and easy to make, a whole mythology already ripe for plucking, it all just feels a little tired. Bliss has the added baggage of also being pretty damn annoying…

Dezzy (Dora Madison) is the stereotypical starving artist suffering a creative block while attempting to finish her most ambitious work yet. She is also one of the most insufferable and unbearable characters ever committed to film. She’s a total bitch to everyone and this makes following her story pretty redundant. I didn’t care about Dezzy. I didn’t care if she finished her shitty painting. I didn’t care about her burgeoning drug addiction. And as a result of that, I also didn’t care when it appeared she was turning into a vampire.

Writer/director Joe Begos shows some visual flair during the more trippy sequences, but his script is genuinely awful and the cast are both odious and shrill. I can’t remember how Bliss made its way on to my watch list, but in a period when I’ve never watched more horror movies in a concentrated period of time, this shitty vampire movie is the bottom of the barrel.

A dull, frustrating waste of a movie. Don’t waste your time.
