Podcast Review: Make My Day: A Clint Eastwood Podcast

A monthly podcast series dedicated to the life and legacy of Clint Eastwood…

Perhaps the most appealing thing about podcasts is how niche they can be. We live in an age where you can pick pretty much any subject and find a 10-hour deep dive into that thing and while some would call this oversaturation, I call it wonderful procrastination. Sure, I’m drowning in marking from my teaching job but that nu-metal podcast I’ve been listening to sure ain’t gonna listen to itself…

In that spirit, Make My Day: A Clint Eastwood Podcast sees Halloweenies/The Losers’ Club alumni Mike Roffman and Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Gerber joined by fellow podcaster Adam Carston for a close reading of everything Clint Eastwood.

Now, this is the perfect kind of deep dive for me because while I’ve long admired Eastwood’s directorial work, particularly his later stuff, his early cinematic efforts are a bit of a blind spot for me and this is borne out by the fact that I hadn’t previously seen any of the films that the podcast has covered so far (Dirty Harry, High Plains Drifter, Space Cowboys, Tightrope and Juror #2). This has opened my eyes to many different sides of Clint Eastwood (sleazy, sleazy, saccharine, sleazy and yet to be decided if we’re matching up with the films listed above) and I have a newfound admiration for his range and also for the sheer scope of projects that he has helmed or appeared in. While his stock in trade is no-nonsense simplicity, Make My Day has revealed to me that Eastwood is a man who contains multitudes.

There are many film history podcasts out there, the thing that perhaps sets this one aside is that it clearly comes from a place of genuine warmth and affection. All the guys involved are incredibly prolific on other podcasts and so this has a real ‘labour of love’ vibe to it that is difficult to resist. Go ahead punk… give it a listen.
