‘From Knightmare to Chucklevision to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers…’
Horror fans will know Mike Muncer from the excellent and acclaimed The Evolution of Horror podcast. That podcast has become so successful that he’s started branching out into both 90s childrens’ TV and a deep dive into Twin Peaks (more on that another day)…
Zzzap to the Future explores the exhilarating and often eccentric world of kids’ TV in the 90s through the eyes of Muncer and his childhood friend and co-host James Payne. Each episode has a different focus whether it be Gladiators, The Queen’s Nose or more bizarre fare such as Ren & Stimpy or anything related to Mr Blobby. While much of the joy of Zzzap to the Future comes from that little rush that comes from unlocking a long-dormant memory, this is not just a ‘Do you remember X?’ podcast – because both hosts come from a broadcasting background there is real insight here. Both Muncer and Payne have a passion for the subject material, making for a compelling podcast that revels in the niche television of the 90s as much as it does the big hitters.
Anyone who grew up in the 90s will soon get lost in the serene waters of nostalgia when listening to Zzzap to the Future but it also works as a document of what was a fascinating era for childrens’ television. From the slightly anarchic chaos of Saturday morning magazine shows to the pervading influence of American kids’ TV (Saved by the Bell! Clarissa Explains it All!), no stone is left unturned – a delightful listen.
